117th Infantry Regiment Military Records Destroyed in the 1973 St. Louis Fire

1973 Fire at the National Personnel Records Center in Overland, Missouri (Post-Dispatch File Photo, St. Louis).

A disastrous fire occurred at the National Personnel Records Center in Overland, Missouri, on July 12, 1973. The fire destroyed approximately 16-18 million Official Military Personnel Files. The following records records were lost:

80 percent of Army Personnel Discharge Documents from November 1, 1912, to January 1, 1960

75 percent of Air Force Personnel Discharge Documents from September 25, 1947, to January 1, 1964 (with names alphabetically after Hubbard, James E.)

No duplicate copies were maintained, nor was a microfilm copy ever produced. There were no indexes created prior to the fire. The only documents saved were documents that had been lent to the Department of Veterans Affairs before the fire occurred. As a result, complete listing of the records that were lost is not available.

With this fire, much of the history of the 117th Infantry Regiment was lost. This web site hopes to reconstruct some of this lost history in memory of those who served.
