Moline High School Class Of 1961

News 2010 - 2019

Mike Roman Passes Away

Born on June 15, 1943, in Madrid, Iowa to Maggie and Mike Roman. He lived in Moline, where he graduated from Moline High School, class of 1961. Mick was a proud veteran of the Vietnam war where he served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant from 1968-1970; amongst his commendations/decorations was the Purple Heart. After returning, he met and then married the love of his life, Rosalie Roman (Van Meter), on Sept. 3, 1971. They moved to the Alpha/Woodhull area in 1971, expanding their family to five children and many horses and pets through the years. Mick worked at John Deere (Harvester) for 35 years — Go Green! He was a longtime member of the American Legion. Mick and Rosalie eventually retired to Mesa, Ariz., in 1999, coming back to their hometown area as often as they could to visit family and friends. Mick was widely known and recognized for his mustache/beard. His picture from basic training would be one of the only times in his life without it. Although he enjoyed fishing and antiquing, Mick's greatest loves were his family; he is survived and will be missed by his wife, Rosalie; sister, Sheila "Susie" Ausmus (Jim); daughter, Kim Becka; son, Jeff Becka; son, Mike Becka (Becky); daughter, Tracey Bannochie; daughter, Michelle Roman. Perhaps where Mick showed even more pride was with his seven amazing grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. His nieces and nephew fondly remember him as a favorite uncle, full of sass, spirit, and laughs. Preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Maggie Roman, and his brother, Tom Dunn, all of whom he loved deeply. His expansive list of friends, both those who have already passed on and those grieving his loss would easily describe Mick Roman as simply One of the Best! Until his last days, he would express his wonder and appreciation that his wife took such amazing care of him and "put up with him." The family is in great appreciation of the doctors, nurses, hospice care and first responders who have treated us so well.

Jim Jamieson Passes Away

Moline's Jamieson, PGA Tour vet, '72 Western Open champ, is dead at 75. Jim Jamieson was one of the best golfers to ever come out of the Quad-Cities area and a fellow pro had no doubts as to what Jamieson could have done on the PGA Tour had things panned out a little differently.“If he had made it on the Tour, he would have been a real star,” said Jim Hasley, who worked with Jamieson when they were both young golfers in the Quad-Cities. It didn’t quite work out that way for Jamieson, who grew up in Moline and was an all-state golfer for the Maroons. With one PGA Tour victory, he showed flashes of brilliance in an era when Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Gary Player were the marquee players. Jamieson, who won the 1972 Western Open, contended at some of golf’s biggest events against the best in the game when he was in his prime. He passed away Wednesday in his adopted home state of West Virginia. The Vietnam war veteran was 75. “He was vibrant. People loved him,” said Hasley, the long-time local teaching professional. “He always smiled and waved at people. Even when he got successful, he recognized people and his hometown friends in the crowd. Not many people do that – they keep their eyes right down the middle and don’t want any distractions. He was gregarious.”Jamieson was also a behind-the-scenes mover of the success of what is now the John Deere Classic. Hasley said that Jamieson was a guy on Tour at the time who talked up the Quad-Cities and helped recruit players here for a fledgling event. That 1971 satellite tournament at Crow Valley Country Club proved to be the start of a budding relationship with the PGA Tour that blossomed into the JDC and the building of the PGA Tour’s TPC Deere Run golf facility. Another local with as many ties to the game as Jamieson said that the former PGA Tour pro was still proud of his roots. “Whenever he saw me, he wouldn’t yell ‘Hey, Tony,’ he would always yell ‘Hey, Maroons,’” said Tony Navarro, a veteran PGA Tour caddie from the Quad-Cities. “As soon as I heard that, I knew exactly who it was.” Navarro said Jamieson was always interested in happenings in the Quad-Cities above and beyond the PGA Tour event. “He would always ask about the basketball back here,” Navarro said of the former standout Moline basketball player. “And Wharton Field House.” Born in Michigan, Jamieson’s family moved to Moline when he was 2. He became enamored with the game of golf and was a two-time prep all-stater for the Maroons. He went on to help Oklahoma State win an NCAA team title in 1963 when he finished tied for 44th individually. The 1967 Illinois State Amateur winner earned his PGA Tour card in 1969.

Lyman Twing Passes Away

Lyman L. Twing, 74, of Moline, and Port Angeles, Wash., died tragically on Sept. 3, 2018, from a fall while clearing trees along a cliff at his home in Port Angeles. He died after apparently falling down a bluff behind his home on Island View Road, Port Angeles, Washington. The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office started searching for Lyman Twing on Monday night after his wife, Phyllis Twing, reported that she was afraid he fell from the cliff where he was working. “He told his wife he was just going to go out and finish picking stuff up and be done for the evening, but he never came back,” Detective Eric Munger said. Munger said all indications are that it was an accidental death. His wife reported him missing at about 9:36 p.m., Munger said. Deputy Don Kitchen arrived at about 10:20 p.m. and by 11 p.m. had found Twing’s body on the beach about 40 to 50 feet below where he was working, Munger said. Clallam County Search and Rescue had recovered his body by about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Twing had been out cutting trees from near the bluff most of the day. He ate dinner with his wife, told her he was tired and that he was just going to finish up what he was doing before putting things away for the night. When Twing did not return within a couple hours, his wife became worried. She went out to check on him but couldn’t find him. She yelled for him and tried to call his cellphone several times, but did not get any response. Twing’s truck was found parked by the bluff with a cable still attached and his ladder and chainsaw were where he had been working.Lyman was born Nov. 7, 1943, in Moline, to Florence and Lester Twing. On May 2, 1964, he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Peterson, in Geneseo. Together they have three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Lyman graduated from Moline High School in 1961 and then became a Tool and Die Maker, having served his apprenticeship at E.G. Erickson Engineering in Moline. For a few years, he also worked in Milwaukee, Wis., later retiring from John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, in 1975. That same year, he started his own business, Track Ties Unlimited, which specialized in the removal and salvage of abandoned railroad lines. In 1985, when his son, Tim, joined him as a partner, they expanded the company to include building new and repairing existing railroad tracks, bridges, tunnels and crossings for numerous companies throughout the United States. They renamed the company, Frontier Track Inc. He later started another company, Twing Construction, which specialized in custom rail and dirt work. Lyman had many skills, from building two custom homes with his wife to building pistol and rifle ranges for gun clubs where he was a member. He was an avid hunter, an accomplished competitive high-power rifle shooter with a master classification, a trap and skeet shooter, and a gunsmith and gun consultant. He was a member of the Milan Rifle Club, serving on its board of directors for several years, a life member of the Schuetzen Club, the Port Angeles Gun Club, the Peninsula Rifle & Pistol Club, the Poulsbo Sportsman Club, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, the Elk Foundation, Delta Waterfowl, the Illinois State Rifle Association, and Friends of the NRA. Lyman was a life member of the NRA, and a true champion of our Constitution’s Second Amendment and Bill of Rights protecting gun owners. All that knew him were aware of how passionate he was in his beliefs concerning our right to keep and bear arms. Adding so much enjoyment to his life were his black Labrador retrievers, Tug, Stella, Blue and Lager. Every day he would be with at least one or two of them, if not all of them, whether it be exercising, training, hunting, or just running errands. He touched many lives because of his love for his hobbies, interests, causes and businesses. He taught us all that anything was possible, not to be afraid to try new endeavors, and that we could accomplish anything that we put our minds, efforts and hard work toward. Lyman will live on in our memories because, as we know — he was “Something Else!!” Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Phyllis; his children, daughter, Tamara Wendt (Earl “Boo”), Moline, son, Timothy Twing, Moline, daughter, Lisa Greenwood (Greg), Davenport; grandchildren, Nathan Sadofsky (Kayla), Zachary Sadofsky (Johnette), Jacqueline and Morgan Twing and Madison Greenwood; great-grandchildren, Landon and Kara; sisters, Marjorie Lea, Rock Island, Cheryl Twing, Moline, and Sandra Sowers (Mike), Gulf Shores, Ala.; and brother, Jeffrey Twing (Audrey), Birmingham, Ala.
