Return To Ethiopia: Recap for Saturday/Sunday

(This is being distributed via both Facebook & as email, so you may see a duplicate.)

On Saturday, 22 September, there will be a dinner/reception at the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, DC, from 5pm to 7pm; please have a picture ID with you in case the Embassy requires same. Location is 3506 International Drive, NW; the nearest Metro stop is Van Ness/UDC, about a 10-minute walk. Parking is mostly by permit only on International Drive, so if you come by car the closest street parking is on Van Ness, which is metered; 5-minute walk up the hill to the Embassy. We will be greeted by Ambassador Girma Birru; the Peace Corps Director (or his representative) has been invited to attend. Business attire is suitable.

Our EAL flight is scheduled to depart Dulles International Airport at 11:15am; for this international flight you should plan to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours prior to flight time. Be sure to have your passport with you for check-in, as well as any flight confirmation printout you received you received from EAL. If you are a member of either United or US Airways frequent flyer programs, bring your membership card or number, as these are partner airlines with EAL & you will be credited with about 14,000 miles for the round-trip journey. Dulles Airport is located about 35 miles west of DC & is most easily reached by car, taxi or shuttle (Washington Flyer); it is also possible to get there by Metro to Falls Church station, then taxi to airport. Note that this is an overnight flight, scheduled to arrive at Addis on 7:45am Monday morning. We will be greeted at Bole Airport by Leo Cecchini, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a film crew & local media, U.S. Embassy staff, and the Peace Corps. Many of the hotels you have booked in Addis offer free pickup at the airport, saving taxi fare—check with your hotel.

It would be a good idea to bring a small supply of US Dollar bills, useful in most countries as tips.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday evening & in Ethiopia!

Leo Cecchini: Return to Ethiopia schedule update.

We may meet iwth Ethiopian government officials on Wednesday so Darrel is holding final arrangements for his Addis tour and Meskel celebration until we know. We are looking at a meetng with the Association of Disabled Ethiopian Women and a get-together of Ethiopian I on Monday.

Please note the education conference venue is about a 45 minute drive to the Ambassador's residence so we will have to go directly from the conference to the reception. I am looking at using busses for this instead of using taxis. I prefer taxis since that means you can go as soon as you want and not have to wait for all to board the busses.

The Peace Corps has confirmed it will host a conference on education in Ethiopia for our group on Tues., Sept 25 at 3 to 5 pm. The conference will be led by a panel of two members from our group, two current Peace Corps Volunteers and two from the Ethiopian Ministry of Education. We will also show a short film on the Peace Corps in Ethiopia done by the crew who will be filming our visit.

ANNOUNCEMENT # 8 (30 August 2012)

The following is a summary of the current & projected status of our trip, prepared for all participants, but especially for those without access to our Facebook Group website

By now, all RPCVs & guests traveling to Ethiopia should have their required visas, air tickets, & vaccinations.

Prior to our departure, the Ethiopian Embassy will host a reception for us on Saturday evening, 22 September, from 5pm to 7pm, at the Embassy at 3506 International Drive NW Washington, DC. Light refreshments or dinner will be served. Business attire is suitable. The Group Leader at the Embassy reception will be Marian Haley Beil, president of E&ERPCV.

Those on the group flight will depart Washington Dulles Airport the next morning, Sunday 23 September, at 11:15am. Do not forget your passports, & please provide your passport number to Russ Misheloff NOW (rmisheloff@comcast.net), who is preparing a list of those in our group for use by Addis airport officials. We will be flying on the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner delivered in Africa, via Ethiopian Airlines, nonstop to Addis Ababa, arriving early Monday morning.

Upon arrival, we will be greeted by officials from the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), EAL, Peace Corps/ Ethiopia, and the U.S. Embassy, as well as the Ethiopian media; our arrival will be captured on video. Also greeting us will be Leo Cecchini, who will be arriving several days earlier as our advance person to coordinate with local officials. Leo is Vice-President of E&ERPCV, and will be distributing copies of our finalized schedule of official in-country activities. He & Marian will be our Group Leaders in Ethiopia.

If you have not already reserved lodging in Addis for the time you plan to spend in the city, please do so as soon as possible.

While Leo will provide the final schedule in Addis, preliminarily we can expect to meet with senior Ethiopian officials on Monday or Tuesday; an education panel event on Tuesday afternoon, moderated by the current PC/Ethiopia Director, Greg Engle; a reception Tuesday evening hosted by the U.S. Ambassador at the Embassy; Meskel celebrations Wednesday evening and Thursday; other events to be determined. Please send Leo (leo@cecchini.org) the names of any Ethiopian guests (students, friends, etc.) you plan to bring to the U.S. Embassy reception in Addis, so he can advise the Embassy; one guest per person—Leo will prepare a waitlist for any additional guests.

Beginning on Friday & Saturday, many of our group will be setting off on tours arranged thru a local travel agency by Darrel Hagberg; others will tour on their own, including visiting their previous communities of service. PC/Ethiopia & the Ethiopian MFA will be notifying current PCVs in those communities (as well as the communities themselves) of prospective visits. In this regard, if you have not already done so, please notify Russ Misheloff of any plans you have to visit places you served (name of place & dates of planned visit) as soon as possible, so we can advise both PC/Ethiopia & the MFA.

Our official group departure from Ethiopia will be on Sunday, 7 October, late in the evening. GETTS, the travel agency handling in-country tours for many of us, has arranged a departure dinner & folklore show at the Crown Hotel for 6pm that evening, free for tour participants, $20/person for all others. We will arrive back at Dulles International Airport the next day at 8:40am.

The excitement builds!

Stephen Cristofar (via Facebook):
All Return To Ethiopia travelers: ASAP, please send your passport numbers to Russ (rmisheloff@comcast.net). Eth Embassy has requested list of names & passport numbers for itself & to send to Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis, as "checklist" for our arrival. Thanks. Steve

Leo Cecchini (via Facebook): 2:50pm Aug 25
To All "Return to Ethiopia" travelers

The American Ambassador in Ethiopia will have a reception for us in Addis the evening of Tuesday, Sept 25. He has also offered to let us invite some of our Ethiopian friends to the reception. If you have an Ethiopian friend in Addis who you would like to invite to the reception please send me have his/her name along with yours. I do not want to abuse this kind offer so am asking you to keep it to one Ehtiopian friend per traveler. I suspect some will not have an invitee so will be accepting names on a waiting list as well. I need these names as soon a possible since I need to submit the list by Sept 7.

Steve Cristofar (via Facebook):

Ethiopian Embassy in DC will host a reception for our group on Saturday evening, 22 September, from 5pm to 7pm, the evening prior to our departure for Ethiopia. The Ambassador will be there to meet & greet us. Light refreshments or dinner will be served. Check the Embassy website for address & directions. Same place reception was held for those who attended the 50th anniversary last year. PC Director will also be invited.

Stephen Cristofar (via Facebook):
Hello All: You may have read that EAL just took delivery of the first Boeing Dreamliner aircraft in Africa. EAL has advised me that we will be flying in it both to & from Addis, as it is scheduled to go into service September 20th. Seat configuration will remain the same, as will our seat assignments & departure times.

Leo Cecchini (Facebook):

To all on the "Return to Ethiopia" trip. We have been offered and we have accepted a reception by the American Ambasssador on Tuesday, Sept 25. More on this and other events later.

Also, for those who hesitated earlier, we have found another offer of a $1300 round trip ticket to Ethiopia for the event. Let me know if you have friends who may want to reconsider the trip and need a reasonably priced flight.

Leo Cecchini (Facebook)
To "All Return to Ethiopia" Travelers

Darrel Hagberg offers a very nice way to end our visit to Ethiopia and I hope you will consider it. (See below). This brings up a question all of you have, "What will we be doing in Ethiopia?" Our basic plan is to have all official functions - receptions, meetings, clam bakes - take place Sept 24 to 28. The first event will be a reception at the airport with government officials, Peace Corps reps, US embassy reps and Ethiopian leaders of the community, as well as the press. We also have a project underway for a film crew to cover the event for posterity.

We expect to meet with the President of Ethiopia, not the Prime Minister, that afternooon or evening. Besides the Ethiopian Government´s plans, we are invited to visit with current Peace Corps Volunteers a
nd the US Embassy. Since I do not have firm commitments for all events I do not have a fixed schedule yet, but will have one by the end of this month to distribute via this web page and elsewhere. I will also hand out a final schedule to each of you at the airport when you arrive.

At this point you can count on the first two days, Monday and Tuesday, being filled with formal events. On Wednesday and Thursday the Ethiopians will celebrate their Meskel Festival and we have set aside most of these days for participating in the event. We are told that the best celebration is held in Addis.

As it now appears we should expect a truly memorable visit. We will pay suitable tribute to the arrival 50 years ago of the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and the lasting bonds of friendship generated between the peoples of that country and America over these many years. It will also be one hell of a trip down "memory lane."

Leo Cecchini (Facebook)
Darrel asked about dress for "Return to Ethiopia" events in Addis. As for the ladies I suggest following Hillary Clinton's lead and wear pants on all occassions. As for the men, I will be wearing a blazer and open necked shirt. After travelling everywhere by every means available I have found that the two greatest items for travel are a good navy blazer that can be worn with slacks and jeans and a pair of Bass Weejuns. The moccasin is the American Indian's gift to us all. You can wear Weejuns in any weather, for any occassion, with almost any clothing, and they are comfortable for walking, hiking, just about any activity except running with the bulls in Pamplona, you must wear shoes that tie.

Russell Misheloff (Facebook)
Communicating with each other while we are in Ethiopia will be a bit complicated since we are not all staying at the same hotel in Addis, and then will be traveling alone or in fairly small groups to various locations. We need a way to be in touch, for instance in the event that there is a last minute change in the time or venue of one or more of the events in Addis. For that purpose, it would be helpful to know where everyone will be staying. We can then ask someone at each hotel to relay messages to others staying at the same place.

After we leave Addis, we would like to have a system whereby we can convey important messages to you (for instance, messages from the State Department or US Embassy about health or other issues; for that purpose I’ve signed up to receive such messages by E
-mail and, on the Facebook page, suggested that others may want to do so as well.

So, bottom line, as soon as possible please provide me with:

1. The hotel you will be staying at in Addis (together with a phone number if possible), and
2. If applicable, the tour you will be taking once you leave Addis, and a contact at the tour agency (including a phone number). Note: At that stage we will try to convey messages thru the tour operator. We will also try to reach you by email and via the Facebook page, while recognizing that that will not always be possible.

This quote is from an Ethiopia travel site:
"The possession of a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is no longer mandatory but visitors coming from countries where Yellow Fever has been reported may be asked. Immunization for Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus, Typhoid and Polio is recommended.
Malaria: in many sites malaria is not a problem because of the elevation – this is true of Axum, Gondar and Lalibela but it may be able to occur in Bahir Dar at the end of the rainy season and after unseasonable rains. Lowland areas along the Awash River, the Omo Valley, Rift Valley and Gambella are subject to malaria outbreaks. Chloroquine resistant strains have been identified in most areas so you should consult your doctor about the prescription. Alternatively, you can keep mosquitoes and other insects at bay with repellent creams and sprays."
I believe the caution also applies to Dire Dawa & Harar.

Darrel R. Hagberg (Facebook)                                                                                                   If you are interested, there will be a "Farewell Dinner and Show" at the Crown Hotel on October 7, 2012 at 18:00. This is rated as one of the best shows in Addis.
The cost is US$20 per person. Please contact "Yared" at gettsethiopia@gmail.com by September 10. You may pay in Ethiopia. If you are on the 9-Day GETTS Tour, then you are already included on the Farewll Dinner and Show.
Yared at GETTS also says that he can arrange a "Transfer" to the airport from the Crown Hotel after the dinner and show for $12 per person. Again, make sure that your luggage is at the Crown Hotel.

Please check that your Ethiopia visas are correct once you receive them. One couple had wife's visa placed in husband's passport & vice versa. If that happens, Consulate advises to carefully peel visa page out of wrong passport & place it in correct passport, using additional adhesive if needed.

Stephen Cristofar (Facebook)
Latest on visas, from the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, DC: They do not know what the situation will be as regards getting visas upon arrival at the Addis Airport in September. If you cannot get your visa(s) via the Embassy, or the Consulate office in LA, or the Mission in NYC, send me (scristofar2@verizon.net) your passport number & name as it appears on passport; I will provide same to Embassy, which will "ask our head office to issue the visa to them on arrival at Bole (Addis) Airport.

For those with telecommunications questions, remember that the television system in Ethiopia is still a state-owned monopoly, tightly controlled. Your blackberry won't work (at least for any kind of data service). It is possible to purchase SIM cards though service is quite spotty because of the vast over-subscription to the system. It is possible to purchase a cell phone in Addis, but it will be pricey. Best option is to get your service provider in the US to give you the unlock code and instructions and just use your US phone If you really need to have a cell phone. Internet traffic is quite closely monitored, and moves are underway to block sites like Skype. Your best bet is is simply decide to be "off-line" while you're in Ethiopia. Who knows? You might like it!

Russell Misheloff (Facebook)
Just a reminder to all that, if you haven't already done so, now is definitely the time to arrange for immunizations in preparation for the trip. Depending on where you live, you may need to do a little searching to find out where you can get some shorts, especially yellow fever. In other cases, like Hepititis B more than one shot is needed for full protection, and they need to be spaced.

OLD NEWS

Leo Cecchini, Russ Misheloff, and Steve Cristofar are working on a trip to Ethiopia for RPCV's this September. The following is information that we have received from them.

Announcement #1

Ethiopia & Eritrea RPCVs is offering a "Return to Ethiopia"
trip this September 2012 to commemorate the arrival of the
Peace Corps in Ethiopia 50 years ago, and to celebrate 50
years of Peace Corps service to the country. In many
respects the Peace Corps in Ethiopia has been the epitome of
all the Peace Corps has been and is. That first group of 286
out of 325 candidates actually doubled the number of
secondary school teachers in a country of maybe 24 million
people. Stunning, dramatic only begin to describe the
audacity of the undertaking.

The trip is open to all E&E RPCVs and a guest — spouse,
companion, friend, child, sibling — one guest per E&E RPCV.

"Return to Ethiopia" will begin with a meeting with the
Ethiopian Ambassador in Washington DC. We will then as a
group board our direct flight from DC to Addis Ababa where
we will be received by Ethiopians from all walks of life who
knew and lived, worked and played with Peace Corps
Volunteers. We will spend our first few days in Addis with
events and activities for the whole group. Following the
group activities, travelers will be free to travel to the
communities where they actually served and to do other
travel. We are working to allow travelers to book their own
return date so as to offer maximum flexibility to participants.

Travel logistics are straightforward. We will book a block
of tickets on Ethiopian Airlines and each traveler will make
his own booking under the group block. Round trip air fare
will be $1300. We are blocking a group of rooms at a hotel
in Addis for the first four nights. Again, each traveler
will book his own room under the group block. Room rates
will be $100 – $150 per night. Individual in-country travel
will be at each traveler's expense.

We have asked the Ethiopian Embassy in Washington for
assistance in making these arrangements — most importantly,
to inform the communities of service that our members will
be visiting them so that they may prepare receptions and events.

We have selected September to visit since that is the month
when we first arrived 50 years ago. It is also the main
season for celebrations with Ethiopian New Year on Sept 12
of our calendar and Meskel on Sept 28.

Please let me know if you plan to go. We will keep travelers
informed of details, especially when and how to book plane
tickets and hotel accomodations.

Please send ALL questions, and reservations to Leo at:

leo@cecchini.org

Announcement #2

The response to "Return to Ethiopia" has been truly impressive. We have received over 100 expressions of interest and the trip is definitely on. Rather than try to reach all responders by individual message we are sending this update to all.

Please note that you must respond directly to Russ Misheloff at rmisheloff@comcast.net

TRIP

Ethiopia & Eritrea RPCVs is arranging a trip to Ethiopia titled "Return to Ethiopia" to commemorate the arrival of the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers in Ethiopia 50 years ago and to celebrate 50 years of Peace Corps service to the country. The trip is open to all RPCVs who served in Ethiopia and Eritrea as well as staff. In order to keep the group to a manageable size we will allow each participant to bring only one companion on the trip.

DATE

The group will assemble in Washington DC on Sept 22 for a reception and send-off at the Ethiopian Embassy that afternoon or evening.

The group will then depart by an Ethiopian Airlines' direct flight from DC to Addis Ababa on Sunday, Sept 23.

We will arrive on Monday, Sept 24 where we expect to have media coverage of our arrival. Later that day we will assemble for a function hosted by the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry.

Tuesday there will be some meetings and a tour of Addis.
Wednesday is the eve of the Meskel Celebration which continues through to Thursday.

Friday will mark the end of our group activities. The rest of the stay will be for travel to your communities of service and other travel. We have a nominal return date of Oct 7, but each participant will be able to book his or her return date earlier or later (see airline info below.)

AIR TRAVEL

We have negotiated a group rate from EAL for departure from DC on Sept 23 and return Oct 7. However, each traveler will be able to book his return earlier or later than that date within reason, i.e. a week before or after those dates.

For each individual the round trip fate is $1310.00. The group rate is a limited economy class ticket that allows changes and cancellation with a penalty.

For in-country travel EAL is offering coupons that can be purchased at the same time as the international ticket. Each coupon can be used to book a single flight within the country, e.g. a trip from Addis to Jimma and return to Addis will require two coupons. The price for coupons will be 2 for $160, 3 for $175, 4 for $200 and 5 for $240, plus tax.

For those who cannot join the group in Washington but want to be with the group, you may travel however you like, just be in Addis on Sept 24. I myself will be coming from Spain. Several airlines offer round trip tickets from the East Coast USA to Addis at similar prices, but all involve stopovers en route.

ACCOMMODATIONS

We will be sending out a list of hotels in Addis Ababa which participants will use in making room bookings for Sept 24 to 28. Prices will range from $70 to $200 a night. Among others, we are looking into getting a group rate at the old Ras Hotel, but this is a somewhat iffy proposition since word has it that the Ras is not run well. However, it could be a real "blast from the past."

IN-COUNTRY TRAVEL

Please include your community of service in your reply to this message. We will pass this on to the Ethiopian Government that will alert your community of service to your visit, The government will also assist in making travel arrangements to your community of service.

ERITREA
For those who served in Eritrea, please note that travel between the two countries is not allowed. However, we are working on getting special permission for a group to travel to Eritrea. We will keep you informed of progress but most likely we will not be able to do this.

Just today Tom Gallagher, who is working on trying to make this happen received the following message from the U.S. State Department regarding travel to and in Eritrea:

Good afternoon—
We updated our travel information for Eritrea today and I thought I’d pass it your way. More information is available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5698.html.
Sincerely,

Announcement #4

Dear All,

Below we provide an update and advice on a variety of topics, many of which we have been hearing from you about, and so know are on your minds.

1. Information for Ethiopian Airlines: EAL has asked that we submit a single list of travelers (rather than in groups of 20 as we were planning to do earlier). We will do that at the end of May. So, for those who want to take the September 23 flight to Addis, but who have not already provided us with complete information, we need name (exactly as it appears on the traveler’s passport), gender, and date of birth of each returned Peace Corps Volunteer and staff plus companions (no more than one per volunteer). We also need the community or communities where you served, places within Ethiopia you plan to travel to by air, including the dates of travel, and your proposed date of return to Washington. Note that you can, but don’t have to return on October 7. In fact, the only restriction is that you return within 90 days of the beginning of your trip, i.e. by December 22. EAL will take the information we provide, calculate how much you owe, advise on how and where to make payment, and will issue coupons for the in-country trips you plan to make.

2. Information for those traveling to Ethiopia on another airline: Please send us your full name (again as it appears on your passport) and that of your traveling companion (if any) and your community or communities of service. This will get you access to events in Addis, and will be communicated to your community(ies) of service.

3. Travel Insurance: Things happen; including, but not limited to, illness before the trip begins, or during the trip itself (including the need for medical evacuation). Insurance is available to cover these contingencies, and to assure that you get back at least part of any monies you have paid in advance. Actually, some credit cards, when used to purchase air tickets, provide trip protection insurance as part of their benefits. So, participants are advised to check their card's benefits brochures to see whether and what coverage is included, if any, and consider whether it is enough. If not, buying additional insurance is not inordinately expensive. We strongly recommend that you protect yourselves in this way. And frankly, if you don’t and something unfortunate happens, we can provide sympathy, but nothing more. Where to go for help on this? A good resource is Travel Guard (http://buy.travelguard.com). You can also contact AAA or AARP, both of which have links to insurance companies.

4. Help with planning tours: There are lots of resources available, including but not limited to:

a. Trip Advisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com) -- provides all kinds of information and reviews of places and facilities by previous travelers; Lonely Planet (www.lonelyplanet.com) is similar.

b. Grant Express Travel and Tours Services, or GETTS, (http://www.getts.com.et/), an Ethiopian tour company.

c. Ethiopian Tourism Agency: info@tourismethiopia.org Think this is an official government agency.

d. Odyssey Ethiopia Tours, Ato Legese Begashaw, manager www.odysseyethiopia.com, info@odysseyethiopia.com.

e. Darrel Hagberg: by email at hagber01@aol.com. Darrel is the husband of an Ethiopia RPCV and will be coming on the trip. He has experience in setting up tours and would like to work with a local tour operator to put together a group tour of the Northern Historic sites for the week following our stay in Addis.

f. Dr Samuel Taddesse www.mogilee.com, or by email: samtad@yahoo.com

"Sam" was on the PC/Addis staff in the past, and was a language trainer for PC both in Addis and the Virgin Islands; he now runs a tour company in Addis.

g. Ethiopian Airlines offers various in-country tours, as well as information on hotels; see its website: www.flyethiopian.com.

Just a word of caution: We believe these are all reputable and competent sources. But we have not vetted them carefully. Please do not interpret our listing them as an endorsement. Similarly, others who are not listed may be good.

5. Immunizations and medical advice: Please see http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/ethiopia.htm for important information specific to Ethiopia from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For individual concerns, of course, consult your doctor. Also, recall that Addis is at high altitude. It may take some time to get acclimated. Don’t overschedule yourself for the first few days.

6. Passports: If you need a new one, please do it now. It takes some time.

7. Visas: We are still waiting to find out whether visa fees will be waived for the group, although we don’t think you should count on it. Visa are available (for a fee) at the airport in Addis. Or you can contact the Embassy, an Ethiopian consulate, or a tour operator for assistance.

It turns out that, coincidentally, all three of the undersigned will be out of the country for part or most of May. We will each have intermittent internet access. But we’d suggest you send communications to all of us. Thanks, and all the best,

Leo Cecchini (leo@cecchini.org)

Announcement #5

Greetings All:

This is an update on a few aspects of our September "Return
to Ethiopia.”

1. *Ethiopian Embassy in Washington, DC*:

RECPTION
The reception for us will be held at the Embassy during theevening of Saturday, 22 September, which should allow
sufficient time for anyone flying to DC that day to attend.Exact time & other details will be set & announced as we get nearer to the trip date.

Those in the DC area who are not participating in the Return To Ethiopia trip itself, but wish to attend the reception,
will be welcome.

VISAS
We have asked the Embassy about the possibility of waivingthe visa fee ($70) for trip participants, but have not yet
received a response. However, as we are 4 months away fromour departure date, there is still the possibility that our
request will be granted. Visas can be issued by the Embassyin Washington (ethiopianembassy.org), or at the airport uponarrival in Addis (we do not have information about the possibility of long lines for visas at the airport).

WELCOME
Embassy staff has indicated that both they and the Ethiopian
Government in Addis are very pleased and enthusiastic about our trip. They will have more information about official
events at the Addis end closer to our trip date.

2. *Ethiopian Airlines (EAL)*

RESERVATIONS
By the end of this month (5-30-2012) all prospective participants who plan to fly with EAL for the trip (both for
the international legs as well as any flights in-country that will NOT be part of a tour package) must have sent in
the required information to Russ Misheloff, who has been preparing a master roster. (See the list of travellers at
http://eandeherald.com/return-to-ethiopia/travellers/ to verify whether we have received this information from you.)

I will then deliver the roster to EAL. EAL, in turn, will price out each passenger’s itinerary, and make the
reservations for him/her,EAL will return the roster to me that will, at this point, include the price and reservation information for each passenger.

Russ &/or I will then notify each passenger of his/her flight costs. We will also provide details on how and where
to pay, including the specific reference code to ensure you receive the group discount fare.

PAYMENT
NOTE: You will not be able to make payment through EAL' s website, but only directly with EAL's office in Washington.

You will need to pay for your tickets IN FULL prior to June 30. Your reservation will not be confirmed until payment has been made, whereupon EAL will issue e-tickets directly to you for your international flights, and in-country flights if requested.

"COUPONS" & INDEPENDENT IN-COUNTRY FLIGHTS
“Coupons” are only for those travelling in-country independently (i.e. not with a professional tour group.)

“Coupons” are only for flight segments within Ethiopia.

There are, in fact, no paper "coupons" issued; instead, you will receive your itinerary that will include any in-country
flights you reserved and paid for.

The prices for these "coupons" are, according to EAL, about 30% below the "rack" rates quoted on their website, and are equivalent to the in-country fares offered to residents of Ethiopia and to local tour companies within Ethiopia.

According to EAL, the dates & places for which the "coupons" can be used can be changed, subject to a penalty of $10 or $15 each.

For those of you who have already provided Russ withinformation about your planned in-country travel (specific dates and places of travel), please indicate in an emailmessage to Russ at

rmisheloff@comcast.net

Before the end of May - if you wish Ethiopian Airlines (EAL) to issue“coupons” to you for that purpose. And for others who stillneed to send him your information, please indicate specifically the flights for which you need coupons (if
any). The purpose of this request is to be sure that EAL is clear about your desires, and does not mistakenly bill you
for travel that you plan to do by surface transportation, or for air travel in Ethiopia that you are paying a tour
company to arrange for you.

IN-COUNTRY TRAVEL WITH TOUR GROUP
Those who are making arrangements to travel in-country withprofessionally arranged tours will pay the tour company for their in-country flights. You will NOT pay EAL directly for those flights.

DEPARTURE FROM DC
As of now, the Dulles to Addis flight for Sunday, 23 September is scheduled to depart at 11:15am, arriving in
Ethiopia at 7:45 am the next day, Monday, 24 September.

DEPARTURE FROM ADDIS TO DC
The group return flight departs Addis at 10:15pm on Sunday, 7 October, stops in Rome for a 40-minute refueling (no
deplaning allowed), arrives at Dulles Monday, 8 October, at 8:40am.

As with any flight schedule, these flights are subject to change; you can check periodically at EAL's website,
flyethiopian.com You can check the EAL website for the scheduling of in-country flights, too. At present, the
airline flies daily between all the major airports in Ethiopia.

UPGRADES
A few people have asked about the possibility of upgrading their seats using frequent flyer miles-- this is not
permitted with our group rate. If you wish to fly Business Class (there is no 1st class offered on this route), the
roundtrip upgrade supplement would be about $3,000 (dollars, not Birr!).

Should you have questions about any of the above, please contact either me - scristofar2@verizon.net

Russ Misheloff - rmisheloff@comcast.net

or Leo Cecchini - leo@cecchini.org

and we'll do our best to answer them.

Best wishes,
Steve Cristofar

Ethiopia uses 220V 50 Hz and C, D, J, & L type plugs. In most 220 volt countries, they will step down the voltage to 110 volts in the bathroom, but you still may need an adapter.
90 percent of plugs will be type C (see below).
What are adapters and what are converters?
Well, this is where my engineering background comes in handy.
Please remember that simple adapters do not convert voltage or frequency, and incorrect use may not only keep you from using your equipment but also damage it or even cause personal injuries. Using a plug adapter just changes the shape of the prongs. You need a Power Converter and not simply a plug adapter. Read the fine print in about you gadget, many devices will accept both 110v and 220v, requiring only a plug adapter.
There are two types of "Power Converters." If your gadget is a 110 V.and high amp unit (1 amp or above), then you will need a "220 to 110v power converter" rated 1 amp and above. If you gadget is less than 1 amp, then you will need a "220 to 100v power converter" rated less than 1 amp. (Note: in Egypt, my teenage daughter blew her high amp hair dryer and my low amp power converter and adapter right out of the wall --- be careful, use the correct converter).
Remember dear daughter:
The Heavy Duty Power Converter weight is Light.
The Light Duty Power Converter weight is Heavy.
Here are some pictures of the plugs that you may need:
Plug C - 2 parallel flat prongs - French type

C - 2 parallel prongs - "French" type
Plug D - Similar to C but with an earth connector - europlug compatible

D - Similar to C but with an earth connector
Plug J - 3 round prongs - Swiss type

J - 3 round prongs - "Swiss" type

Plug J - 2 round prongs aligned with the earth connector

L - 2 round prongs aligned with the earth connector
