Memorial to First Lieutenant William L. Locke


First Lieutenant William L. Locke was a Platoon Leader in Company M of the 117th Infantry Regiment. He and his platoon succeeded in holding off a German counterattack on July 9th, 1944, in the heavy fighting in the Hedgerows (or The Bocage) of France. He was wounded in action but died later on July 16. His heroic actions of that day earned him the "Silver Star."

 

General Hobbs, the commanding officer of the 30th Infantry Division, awarded First Lieutenant William L. Locke the Silver Star for his heroic actions.

 

First Lieutenant William L. Hobbs is buried at the Normandy Cemetery in France along side his comrades.
