The company, established in 1883, was commissioned to produce two Civil War cycloramas - the Battle of Missionary Ridge (1883-84) and the Battle of Atlanta (1885-86) as well as a series on biblical themes. On a summer day a century and a half ago, Union and Confederate soldiers struggled for control of Atlanta's crucial railroads. Now, the painting that commemorates the Battle of Atlanta is itself the center of its own tug of war.The massive, panoramic painting has been housed in Grant Park for 90 years. But with the need for upkeep becoming more critical, the painting is being eyed by the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead, where curators see an opportunity to give the exhibit a sparkling new home.Meanwhile, a civic group called Central Atlanta Progress is interested in moving the painting to downtown Atlanta, where it is hoped cross-marketing with other tourism attractions could boost the number of visitors. At the same time, some Grant Park residents say the painting should stay in its historic home, near the battlefield site. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has not yet announced a decision.Looming over the debate is the fact that, unless a deep-pocketed private partner is found, the painting could require millions of dollars in taxpayer money for upkeep. That money will be hard to find in a time of leaner city budgets. And outside groups say it wouldn't make much sense to spend the money to rehabilitate the painting in an old building that apparently doesn't attract as many tourists as school kids. Kent D.
